In this digital, modern, busy day and age, finding purposeful time to tune in on a spiritual familial level may be quite difficult. Such moments, however, are necessary; at least as far as faith growth is concerned, but also to establish healthier and more affectionate relationships within the family. The gap can be filled with a well-planned family devotional book, which would encourage families to take time out, think, and develop in their faith.

The importance of Family Devotionals

Devotional does not simply mean reading the text, it is a ritual. Families are not carrying out a spiritual routine when they sit together to pray, read Scripture and exchange ideas. They are giving a place where in all people including young children, adolescents, and the parents, are safe, listened to, and corrected spiritually. These are times that promote:

·         Unity- Making the family day or week centered with the same message strengthens the family bond.

·         Faith Formation Children are not only preached Sunday sermons to learn faith but also learn through daily practice and example.

·         Emotional Resilience – Spiritual routines can provide solace, calmness and sense of stability when face with stress or unknown.

What is a Good Devotional Book?

Devotional books are not made the same. An excellent one involves all family members irrespective of their age and experiences. Find a family devotional book that has:

·         Age appropriate materials- Thoughts that children will be able to digest and more insightful ones by adults.

·         Discussion prompts, these are questions or something practical that makes everyone involved.

·         Shorter, Good Readings- Devotionals capable of fitting into our busy schedules and still contain the heft that is needed.

·         Scripture-based truth- It is based on the Bible and aims at helping families use the Word of God in daily living.

Developing the Habit: Creating Devotions a Family Affair

It does not necessarily need to be complicated. Pick 10-15 minutes at the beginning or the end of the day. Find a cosy corner in the lounge room, switch on a candle or sit around the kitchen table.

Taking up the Habit: Developing Devotions as a Family Practice

It need not be at all elaborate. Make time to do it 10-15 minutes when the day starts or ends. Make a comfortable place in the home, burn a candle, or sit at the kitchen table. They can keep turns in reading, praying, or answering the questions by each of the members of the family. Perfection is not important, it is presence.

As time goes by, these mere congregations turn into holy rituals, not only spiritual experience, but also a family nostalgia.

Closure: A Step of a Lifetime in a Small Step

Faith is nurtured within the context of the community and the first and most significant community within the life of a child is the family. Instead of seeing the purchase of a family devotional book as paying money to read some wisdom, it is much more effective to view the purchase as investing in spiritual development, improvement of communication, and sense of purpose in your home.

In the distraction-filled world, it can often be the strongest outcome of love when a family finds itself in faith.
